R L Cakes

Hi, Ruby here! So, many of you don't know what our name 'R L Cakes' stands for. The R is for Ruby (Me)👩🏼‍🍳 and the L for Lisa (My Mum)👩🏻‍🍳!

We are mother and daughter - I know you must think we're crazy (trust me we have had our fair share of shouting matches🤣) but I would NOT be where I am without my mum! No one would do more for me and I am forever grateful to her. We are home-bakers 🏡 and have taught ourselves everything we know!

HOW WE STARTED

I've always enjoyed baking. When I was younger I'd help my mum or nana bake something every week, brownies and lemon drizzle are family faves!

Fast forward to just after the first lockdown, my mum bought a stand mixer. Mum started baking more and more and I would join in. One day, my mum was making her friend a cake as we had all the kit from lockdown, but her patience ran out when smoothing the buttercream. I took over and had a go, and I just fell in love.

From there, more of mums friends made orders and then strangers too (a lot of which are now loyal customers and friends of mine!) We have grown organically, mainly by word of mouth before our Instagram and Facebook were noticed more.

Mum helped me to get started with my bakes, as I was only 15 years old, still at school and going through my GCSEs. She helped with admin, would bake the cakes for me if I was at school and I would come home to decorate.

Over time, I grew in confidence. Mum took a massive step back from the bakes but still helps out A LOT behind the scenes, but also does her own orders from the Etsy store.

Now, we have so many machines and our baking kit has just grown and grown, so much that our kitchen looks like a storage unit at the minute! Hopefully, after college, I can get a space so I can separate home from work and my family can have their home back.

Ruby, specialises in decorating bespoke cakes and cupcakes, and Lisa specialises in Royal Icing sugar cookies and fondant figures.

Together, we make fabulous creations that fit every customer, personally!

I am currently in college, studying T-Level Business Management and Administration, which I finish in the coming May. My mum works full-time in the public sector so we both run this business in our own time. Mum and I have big dreams and plans for the future, but for now, we are keeping it in our cosy kitchen. Watch this space and you will see us grow (I plan on one day helping fellow bakers like myself to grow too!)
