Back Story

Our Story
R L Cakes was founded in Doncaster, South Yorkshire by mother-daughter duo, Ruby and Lisa. I, Ruby, am the face of the brand and run the business full-time, having done so since I was 15 years old. My mum, Lisa, keeps an arm's length from the business now, although she helped a massive amount behind the scenes during our first few years.
How It All Started
It all began when Lori, a close family friend, asked us to create a cake for her nephew's birthday. She knew we had all the right gear because we regularly baked for fun during the lockdown.
As my mum was working on Lori's cake, she got a bit flustered trying to get the final coat of icing completely smooth. So, I stepped in and took over. To my absolute surprise, the skill came to me completely naturally!
We posted that single order on my random fun page on Instagram, and my mum shared it on Facebook. From that one post, we instantly got 6 orders. Since then, the business has completely snowballed into the R L Cakes we know and love today.
What We Bake
Over the last 7 years, we have built a memorable reputation, a refined skillset, and a wonderful customer base here in Doncaster.
Today, we have a huge range of bakes to offer. We specialize in everything from stunning celebration cakes, classic cupcakes, and intricate floral cupcakes to our signature cupcake bouquets and custom-decorated sugar cookies. Looking for a quick treat? We also offer delicious impulse bakes, including brownies, blondies, and gourmet stuffed cookies! When we have the time, we are always open to trying brand-new things—the possibilities are endless.
Building a Dream
I always thought I would head off to university. However, after finishing college, I realized that while I'm young, the least I can do is give myself the chance to build something entirely for me. Something to focus on. Something to be proud of. I have personally put my absolute all into R L Cakes—it is truly my baby.
My ultimate dream is to one day have a physical, brick-and-mortar space for R L Cakes. A peaceful, cozy place where you can come to relax, unwind, and enjoy a nice drink with a little sweet treat. I aspire to be a true pillar in our local community—a place where regulars feel safe, cared for, and welcome.
We don't just want customers; we want friends and a community. As my favorite saying goes: 'If you want a village, you must be a villager.'
